More on… the PAD’s origins.
Why PAD?
One might be wondering why are these hundreds of thousands Thai people gathering at this place and at this time under the summer heat and alternate days of soaking rain. Are PAD lunatics?
The answer is simply because the previous Thaksin and Samak’s governments of Thailand have used their power in fraudulent activities and put in place corrupt policies to abuse their own people and violate all forms of decency that no civilized individual with a conscience can ignore.
The abuses range from human rights violations (over 3,000 innocent people were shot dead), suppression of media’s freedom, police harassment, threats against it citizens, undue influence / conflict of interest violations, election fraud, insider trading, land grab for personal gain, tax evasion, tampering the constitution and wide spread corruption by government officials and more.
We want to tell the world about this civillian dictator and corruptor,Thaksin Shinawatra, and his bully government headed by a proxy political party under Samak Sundaravej who is one of the worst PM of Thailand, if not second to Thaksin. So far, foreign governments look the other way.

PAD’s primary weapon, plastic clapping hands
There are lots of things about Thailand’s long-running anti-government protests to startle a casual visitor.
The toilet paper stalls that lead down to the tangle of plastic tents inside Government House, for example, or the free haircuts handed out to protesters beside its elegant steps.
But perhaps the most surreal hallmark of this political crisis is the craze known as “clapping hands”.
Their noise rises from inside the government compound every few minutes – a sound somewhere between the chattering of insects and the clickety-clack of factory machines.
One for the man who betrayed the country, and one for my husband!
Buntheung, shopping for clappers
It is the sound of thousands of protesters waving the latest must-have accessory – hand-shaped plastic rattles, in lurid colours, which clatter loudly when shaken.

Sufficiency Economy
“Sufficiency Economy” is a philosophy bestowed by His Majesty the King to his subjects through royal remarks on many occasions over the past three decades. The philosophy provides guidance on appropriate conduct covering numerous aspects of life. After the economic crisis in 1997, His Majesty reiterated and expanded on the “Sufficiency Economy” in remarks made in December 1997 and 1998. The philosophy points the way for recovery that will lead to a more resilient and sustainable economy, better able to meet the challenges arising from globalisation and other changes.
Philosophy of the “Sufficiency Economy”
“Sufficiency Economy” is a philosophy that stresses the middle path as the overriding principle for appropriate conduct by the populace at all levels. This applies to conduct at the level of the individual, families, and communities, as well as to the choice of a balanced development strategy for the nation so as to modernise in line with the forces of globalisation while shielding against inevitable shocks and excesses that arise. “Sufficiency” means moderation and due consideration in all modes of conduct, as well as the need for sufficient protection from internal and external shocks. To achieve this, the application of knowledge with prudence is essential. In particular, great care is needed in the utilisation of untested theories and methodologies for planning and implementation. At the same time, it is essential to strengthen the moral fibre of the nation, so that everyone, particularly public officials, theorists and businessmen, adheres first and foremost to the principles of honesty and integrity. In addition, a balanced approach combining patience, perseverance, diligence, wisdom and prudence is indispensable to cope appropriately with critical challenges arising from extensive and rapid socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural changes occurring as a result of globalisation.

Below are my personal answers to some trivial questions
What is opposite of Sufficiency Economy?
Look at the latest hamburger crisis right now. You get the idea. When you have no real base, and you try to grow money on money without the real value. I would like to call that “vicious capitalism.”
Is Sufficiency Economy against Capitalism?
No, but you need to have morality to run business. That’s it! Everyone’s winning, nobody loses

PAD’s siege of airports is WRONG!
No one will support a party that has put an international community with nothing to do in Thailand’s internal political bickering in harms way.
Even if you win, you have lost the faith of the world. Your act has isolated Thailand! Your Government, if it ever comes to be, will never receive the world’s respect.
Your stupidity has only strengthened your opposition.

I am embarrassed for all the foreigners (and some foreign embassies) who only think of their own minor inconveniences and do not even try to understand the history and real facts behind this struggle.
I have lived in Thailand for over 30 years and feel a deep love for this country. If the closing of the airport hurts the present government and forces them to quit, then it is the right thing to do.
I am including a link to some images I took the other night at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

George,
I’ve also traveled to, worked in & lived in Thailand for about 30 years as well.
Struggle?
This isn’t some noble protest to remove an evil dictator & bring democracy to the masses – it’s a struggle between two groups of equally self-interested people who’s only interest is power (business & political). The real issues (which you are no doubt aware of) are just being used as a justification. Nothing will alter whichever group ‘wins’ despite the sincere hopes of the average protester who as normal has been hoodwinked into doing someones dirty work only to later find it was all for nothing.
There’s no doubt as to who’s already lost – it’s Thailand.
It’s a great shame it had to come to this at any time but especially at the time of the kings 80th birthday – what a present!
By the way – being trapped as so many tourists are is hardly a “minor inconvenience” – all for nothing in the end as well.

@Russel
Do you know what the word “Active Citizen” mean?
If PAD leaders really aimed for benefits, they would have given up by now and got hundreds or thousands million baht and ended this mob. Why should they spend time in those dangerous places all the time?.. And to those saying the leader would be behind the people.. That is wrong.. PAD leaders are in front of the rally every time.. They have announced for many times not to be in any political positions after all of this. They are very tired, the same to fellow PAD in every location. They wish to end this as much as you do.. but what did you do to help the country except nothing and saying “Let’s it be”
Look to the word “Active Citizen” again.. We, PAD the active citizen comparing to the people who only want to live without fighting for anything… You won’t be able to do anything at all. If you dare.. come on street and -demand- for something you want..
But look at the size of PAD.. Why there are so many people out there believing in the better society for everyone to live in… including you.
What else you can do instead of complaining?… So do something you thing it is constructive instead of come here and complaining for nothing.

Russell’s comments are as true today as they were back in 2008. Everybody gets dragged into the crocodile fighting and misses the Solution, draining the swamp. So long as elected seats are cat bird seats of corruption, Thailand’s next 100 years will be like the last 80, gang warfare politics.

Sorry to have to disagree with you Russell but there is a huge difference between the two sides. The one side wants to build a Singapore style family dynasty run government and the other wants to bring back the traditional style Thai value system (which I fell in love with 30 years ago).
I by far prefer the traditional Thai value system, it is not without it’s faults of course, but no system is.
The idea of living under and supporting a family dynasty run government repulses me. If it appealed to me I would have moved to Singapore a long time ago.
My suggestion to any tourists who feels stranded or trapped in Thailand is to try and learn something from the experience. It will all be over very soon and you will be back home safe and sound before you know it, with plenty of stories to tell at the local pub.
Local farang and Thai businesses that are suffering, I feel for you and I will no doubt suffer too, but that is the price we sometimes have to pay for change. Let us hope that it all works out for the better in the end.

Hi everyone.
I work in thai restaurant and I watch the new ASTV News. I saw how well this organization held their conferences or meetings outside the street. It was also interesting how well they manage to work as a community helping each other by given food one another and setting a place to sleep with a sense of trust one another.
My first impression about the clapping hands was something useless but later I realize that was not the point behind it it was symbol of non-violent way to protest and be as a team clapping for happiness for a change ” They say that Thailand is the land of smiles”.
I have a question, now that Thailand has a new prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. He having to deal with red shirts or Thaksin followers. They are creating almost the same strategies as People Alliance for Democracy did without of course of violence. What’s is going to happen next?
The red shirts are building themselves by creating almost the same supposedly struggles as the PAD did. Is Thailand Parliament going to do something about it.
What does the King of Thailand says about this riots of these people wearing red shirts?
Thank you for your time.
p.s.
I hope justice prevail soon for those people in need.
