the Nation reports that Chamlong has offered to pay the allowances and provide food if the military will provide 2 or 3 soldiers to stand with each of his guard points

seems that the PAD are quite desperate to get the military involved... so far Anupong seems to have held the line which seems to be really frustrating the PAD... and other people behind them?

a military coup trying to happen?

what a pity if Thailand doesnt escape from this childish behaviour

the PAD claim the country people are too dumb to vote...

it seems the PAD and their supporters are too dumb and backward looking to:

move into a modern open, transparent world where everyone in Thailand is valued

and gets to express their opinions at the ballot box

I keep saying this is nothing to do with Thaksin the person... its to do with democracy

I dont believe Thaksin will come back into political power in Thailand... but its important that the democratic government envisaged in the 1997 constitution continues... with many different leaders and several parties involved

yes... I imagine the PAD have some frustrations with the military... who do not seem at ll keen to support yet another burst of incompetent government

I guess CNS people are still enjoying the sudden wealth achieved from the 2006/07 episode, so its a bit soon... if the PAD wait a couple of years until they are hungry again?

I guess its also well know that many wealthy people were very disappointed (shocked, suddenly facing lack of money) when Thaksin reworked the lottery system to reduce the "underground" scams that were operating... so no doubt these people would love to get back to their old lotteries cash cow

I am disappointed if Thaksin did not move education forward because this is fundamental to a fully productive and democratic community

I look forward to the PAD encouraging the current government to press ahead with its education initiatives and if not sufficient to push them to do better for all Thai people

I mention here the movement in South America where Bolivia, Venezuela and other countries are picking up on the Cuban example of completely free education and health for all residents and also assistance to any in the world that request... these countries now have the highest literacy levels and very strong negotiated relationships with other countries... a moel that Thailand should study carefully

Moreover, it is also obvious that he never really intended to develop education in Thailand. He is the one who really think that to make majority of people stupid because it is the way for him to remain in power.

Under-educated people barely know why many Thaksin's policy corrupted and would only destroy the country in the long term.

Under his government he was well known of setting up a budget, and get a commission from that.. so the government would buy many things just for him and his cabinet to earn the commission. One obvious example was that the ministry ordered a big set of computers and sent to schools in rural area, but those schools didn't have electricity yet.

It was also well known that the government supported young students to sell lotteries in schools and universities. Some people said it was a honest career and student can earn money since they were young..

Do you know? His cabinet changed ab education minister many times? He used to work in that position also.. and what did he do? He marketted himself by pretending to be a teacher teaching at a local school. (if my memory is correct, the class was broadcasted on the national television)

There are plenty more..

PAD don't want military to take over anymore. PAD also fears that military is on the Thaksin side and PAD may continue to protest even after military taking over.

Most importantly, another military coup = "tearing Thailand 's Constitution" this is not what PAD want.

David, I don't know whether you understand Thai language or not, but if you listened PAD carefully, you should have known now what PAD really think about the military.

Thaksin won the support of the poor by promising them debt relief, cheap loans, improved health care, and other services that were not previously part of the currency of Thai politics.

I personally think that his idea was great, he also got support from academics and many elite people for his idea, he seemed to be the best choice at that time... but... his implementation turned out to be real bad and aiming just to benefit himself and his party to remain in power.

“We have to give credit to Thaksin’s policy because it inserted a lot of money into low-income farmers and workers, which reduced poverty,” said Somchai Jitsuchon, research director at TDRI who now serves as an advisor to the Finance Ministry. “But it was just temporary. The money just went from hand to hand without increasing the potential for production or income earning.”

Thaksin certainly spent a lot of cash on anti-poverty programs but it seemed to create a culture of dependency in which people would come to rely on cheap money from the state. If the villagers couldn’t pay back the loans, they would just caravan to Bangkok and sit in front of Parliament until they got what they wished.

Thaksin’s policies were also seen as fiscally irresponsible since many of the programs were funded off-budget through state-owned banks. The IMF and credit agencies warned for years that these could disguise the state’s real liabilities

The evidence on Thaksin’s economic management is mixed. His external policies helped boost exports, the main driver of economic growth, which helped reduce poverty. But his domestic stimulus measures were inefficient at targeting the poor and ultimately unsustainable.

By concurrently offering cheap loans and debt forgiveness, Thaksin was hardly instilling principles of sound economic management while creating a dependent rural population that could be counted on to keep Thai Rak Thai in power.

Indeed, early on in Thaksin’s tenure economists warned about the problem. “The development policies of the [Thaksin government] have taken into account various measures to increase social welfare of the Thai people,” Medhi wrote in 2002. “However, many of these policies measures are inefficient and wasteful as they distort the working mechanisms of the market.”

Whereas Thaksin’s schemes may have boosted the country’s rural poor, the country’s long-term competitiveness hasn’t improved much.

Hitler promised to solve the economic collapse of Germany but preached hate and fear and solved the economic problems by involving and expanding the military and overthrowing the elected government

Thaksin solved the economic crisis by funding the poor to become productive, developed the country's infrastructure and won elections because people wanted his policies

Now who is it that is preaching hate and wants another military takeover?
